Up 32-20 at the half, the Washington State Cougars held on for a 62-50 victory against the Portland Pilots to record their seventh consecutive victory. At 7-0, the start to this season marks the Cougs best opening run since the 1993-94 season in which they made it to the NCAA tournament.

NCAA Update: Derrick scores 17, WSU 6-0

Derrick Low MontroseDerrick Low ‘04 scored a game-high 17 points in 65-63 victory over future UH opponent and WAC member, Boise State. Despite trailing for most of the game, the Cougs were able to pull out the win with timely shooting and a hard-nosed defense which forced 21 turnovers and 3-19 (15%) shooting from three. Coby Karl, son of Denver Nuggets coach, George Karl, led the Broncos with 19 points.

WSU will play its next game against the University of Portland Pilots on Wednesday, November 29th at 4pm HST (not televised).

Special Note: This will be a sort of “REVENGE” game for Derrick as he will have the opportunity to go against former Montrose Christian guard Taishi Ito who is a freshman on the Pilot squad. If you remember back a couple years ago, Ito nailed a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to help nationally ranked Montrose Christian beat the Raiders by 1 point in the quarterfinals of the Iolani Classic.

More Alumni:

Bobby Nash ‘03 - UH - After struggling in his first two games (2-19), Bobby rebounded with 13 points against Pac-10 opponent Oregon State and a game-high 17 points in a 1 point win against Hofstra. In the semifinal game of the Great Alaskan Shootout against Cal, Bobby struggled (as did the rest of the team) but came back strong the following night with 10 points in a 71-60 victory over Pacific.

Kyle Pape ‘05 - Colorado School of Mines - In two recent losses over the weekend, Kyle was held to 11 points (in 2 games) dropping his average to 9.8 ppg on 35.7% shooting.

Hennasea Tokumura ‘06 - Utah - Despite being a true freshman, Hennasea has seen a lot of playing time for the Utes as they enter this year with a fairly new and inexperience team. Through 5 games (1-4), she has averaged 14.4 minutes coming off the bench to make a significant contribution even in close games.

Keilyn Fujioka ‘06 - Willamette - Freshman forward Keilyn Fujioka has made an early impact for the Willamette Bearcats this season, starting 4 games and leading the team in rebounding (7.8/game) and blocks (8). She is averaging 6.8 ppg shooting a team-best 41.2% (among players with more than 10 attempts), but despite her efforts, WU has yet to pick up a win (0-5).

Lana Young ‘03 - Claremont McKenna - In her final year as a member of the CMS (Claremont-Mudd-Scripps) basketball team, Lana has started at guard every game thus far for the 1-2 Athenas. She is currently averaging 6.7 ppg with a high of 12 points in a win against La Sierra University. Joining Lana on the CMS team, but in a limited role, is fellow alumnus Kari Oki ‘05 who currently attends Scripps College.

Iolani Basketball Loses 1st Preseason Game

After about a week of full practice (but missing 3 players from the football team), the Iolani Raider Boys Basketball team opened their 2006-07 season with a 56-55 overtime loss to the Moanalua Menehune. Down most of the game, the Raiders were able to mount a comeback tying the game on a 3-pointer with under a minute to play in regulation. Able to get the ball back with 13 seconds remaining and the score still tied, Iolani sophomore, Liloa Nobriga, got off two final shots but was not able to convert. In overtime, the game went back and forth with each team missing a number of freethrows and no team taking a lead larger than a few points. Down one, Iolani had the final possession but was not able to get a shot off before time expired. The team was led by senior Case Miyahira who scored 21 points including six 3-pointers.

Math team winning streak ENDS!

In case you haven’t been following the exploits of the Iolani School Math Team, here’s an update… They’ve been dominating the Oahu Mathematics League for almost 10 years with their last loss coming on January 11, 1997. No program at Iolani, athletics or otherwise has been able to achieve that type of success on the state level over that length of time.

Well… after winning 66 consecutive matches, the Iolani squad finally fell to the McKinley High School Tigers (who are among the state’s top math teams themselves) on October 28th.

The team is coached by AP Calculus teaching guru Michael Park.

Are you ready for some football?… Monday Night!

If you’ve sat down early enough before kickoff of the Monday Night Football game on ESPN, you’ve seen it… You know, the 1 minute and 30 second introduction filled with ridiculous computer generated graphics and features a weekly celebrity. Well, whether you have or not, know that one of Iolani’s own, Grant Okita ‘94 was a part of the production team that created the video as a designer/animator for “The Syndicate”. Grant is currently living and working in the Los Angeles area and has been a part of the video production world for some time now having worked most notably under renowned director Joseph Kahn on several music video projects for such celebrities as Janet Jackson and Britney Spears.
