Water Polo Falls to Punahou

The Iolani Boys Water Polo Team fell to Punahou yesterday 10-7 in the championship playoff for the “overall” ILH title at Kamehameha. There is no state tournament for boys water polo, so this loss ended their season.

The ILH Division I currently consists of 4 teams, Iolani, Punahou, Kamehameha & Pac-5 and the season is broken down into two parts, the “regular season” and the “tournament.” In the “regular season” each team plays every other team twice with the team with the best record becoming the “regular season” champion. Though Iolani split with Punahou during that time, a mid-season loss to Pac-5 allowed the Buff-n-Blu to take the “regular season” crown. In the “tournanment”, teams are seeded according to their finish in the “regular season.” Iolani, seeded 2nd, was able to make it through the opening round and defeat Punahou in the championship game thereby winning the “tournament” crown. So… in this case, since the “regular season” champion and the “tournament” champion were not the same team, there was a single championship playoff for the “overall” title.
