Basketball: Iolani vs. St. Louis

Event Date: Thursday, February 1st, 2007

The Iolani Boys Basketball team picked up their 7th win of the season yesterday at Damien keeping them tied atop the ILH standings with Punahou at 7-1. The “1″ in the loss column can be attributed to the St. Louis Crusaders who beat the Raiders 51-48 earlier in the season and are just a half game back at 7-2.

Iolani will have their second chance at St. Louis on Thursday, February 1st at 7:00pm at Iolani Gym in an important game that could very well determine who will receive the automatic bid to the state tournament and, not to mention, still be in contention for the ILH title.

KHON2 Athlete of the Week: Ryan Dung ‘07

After hitting “the shot” last Friday night in the hills of Kapalama, senior guard Ryan Dung was named the KHON2 Athlete of the Week.

Ryan Dung - KHON2Through 7 games this season, Ryan has been a consistant threat to score both going to the basket and from beyond the arc and has emerged as the team’s vocal leader, a role he is very familiar with after coming off of his first season as the football team’s starting QB.

Iolani wins the 2007 Science Bowl!

Chau Huynh, Roydan Ongie, Xiaolong (Leon) Hou, Thanh (Truong) Vu and Leslie Kim may not be the most recognizable students on campus, and may not appear on TV for sports, but I can guarantee there’s many an Iolani student who’d love to be in their shoes come May when the team travels for free to Washington, D.C.

With wins against Hawaii’s best this past weekend, the Iolani Science Bowl team led by Biology teacher Randy Warehime, will head to Washington, D.C. in May to face the top teams from around the country in the National Science Bowl sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Iolani Softball: The Special K’s

Masutani sistersThe Honolulu Advertiser has written a nice feature on the three Masutani sisters, Kaz ‘07, Kai ‘08 and Kryn ‘10 (shown, Honolulu Advertiser), as they enter their first state tournament together as members of the Iolani Softball team. Both quality hitters and fielders, the trio have been a large part of the success of this year’s team which is making its first appearance in the state tournament since 2002.

Iolani is coached by Chris Shimabukuro ‘85, who in his first two years as head coach in 1999 and 2000, won back to back state championships. He and his team hope to have the same success this year.

The story was written by Iolani alum Wes Nakama ‘86 who covers prep sports for the Honolulu Advertiser.

Iolani Basketball: Whatta Game! Whatta Game!

It was really ugly for three and half quarters… got a little better with four minutes left… and then it got OH SO PRETTY. Senior Ryan Dung closed out a stellar fourth quarter with a high arching three pointer from the left corner with 1.6 seconds remaining to send the Raiders back to Kamoku Street with a one point win over the Kamehameha Warriors.

The final 1-point margin was only the second lead of the game for Iolani who started the game at 2-0. The Raiders are now 6-1 in the ILH and in a first place tie with Punahou. Iolani will play its next game at Damien and then return home for their final four games, closing the ILH season with Punahou on Thursday, February 8th.

In case you missed it, the Iolani vs. Kamehameha game will be rebroadcast on OC16 on Sunday, January 28th at 10:30am (according to the OC16 website, so make sure to tune in. (Don’t waste your time with the first three and half quarters… just watch the last four minutes.)

NCAA Volleyball: Mike Contee ‘04

Mike ConteeAs the starting libero for the Quicy (Illinois) Hawks, everything seemed to be falling into place for Mike Contee ‘04. In 2006, he was an All-MIVA academic team selection and ranked 8th nationally in digs per game, but this year, after their final preseason game, his coach decided to make a change.

Coach Hadley Foster moved Mike to setter. At 5-10, setting isn’t the ideal position, but Mike stepped into his role willingly, in the true “One Team” spirit. The Quincy team is currently 0-2, but hopes to put things together enough to make it to the NCAA tournament later this year.

Basketball: Iolani vs. Kamehameha (TV)

Event Date: Friday, January 26th, 2007

Iolani Kamehameha - Honolulu AdvertiserComing off of a nice win at Punahou, the #1-ranked Iolani Boys Basketball team will face another tough challenge when they venture up Alewa Heights to play the Kamehameha Warriors on Friday at 8:00pm.

After starting the season 0-3 with losses to Iolani, Punahou and St. Louis, the Warriors have run off three straight wins including their best performance of the season against a scrappy Maryknoll team last Saturday. Kamehameha is led by senior Rykin Enos and though undersized, the team plays hard-nosed defense from the tip to the final buzzer which usually keeps them in every game until the end.

In their first meeting, the Raiders pulled out a low-scoring double-overtime win at Iolani, so the Warriors will be ready for their second opportunity on their home floor. The game will be televised locally on OC16 and streamed live via the internet at www.OC16.tv.

ILH Softball Championship: Iolani vs. St. Francis

Event Date: Friday, January 26th, 2007

The Iolani Softball team picked up a much needed 5-2 win today over Sacred Hearts to force a playoff with the St. Francis Troubadours on Friday at 3:45pm @ Kamamalu Field.

The Raiders are tied with the Troubadours at 11-3 and have already beat them twice during league play, but because the ILH does not use head-to-head results as a tie-breaker, the two teams will play off to determine the overall championship. Win or lose, both teams have qualified for the state tournament which starts on January 31 and will be played at the UH Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.

Washington State wins the 2007 NCAA National Championship!

NCAA 07Well… not in real life (yet), but they may have “In the Game” on EA Sports recent video game release “NCAA 07 - March Madness“. On your PS2 or XBOX, you’ll have the opportunity to BE Derrick Low ‘04 and take control of his game as you lead the Cougars to their first ever Final Four. Because college sports games can’t use real names for their players (because they are amateurs), Derrick is PG #2.

Also in the game as a part of the Chaminade team is guard Ryan Hirata ‘04. Though Chaminade is a Division II school, they have been included as part of NCAA 07 (which consists of all Division I teams) because of EA Sports’ affiliation and title sponsorship of the prestigious Maui Invitational basketball tournment which is hosted by the Silverswords. In the game, Ryan is also #2.
