ESPN The Magazine: Derrick Low ‘04

Washington State senior guard Derrick Low ‘04 was featured in a full page spread in the Nov 19th edition of ESPN The Magazine along with a short writeup that talks about his laid-back attitude and uniquely Hawaiian roots.

ESPN Derrick LowThrough six games this season, Derrick is leading the team in scoring at 15.5 points per game while shooting 47.4% from the field and hitting on 48.6% from three (17-35). The Cougars are currently undefeated at 6-0 and will play their next game at Baylor on Friday, November 30th (Televised on ESPNU at 4:00pm HST).

From the magazine:
That nothing-fazes-me smile is maddening. “You could be shouting at him the heat of battle,” says coach Tony Bennett, “and he’ll go, ‘Hmm, I guess I didn’t think about that.’” Mostly, though, the laid-back Low lulls foes as stealthily as a mai tai. The Honolulu native’s ponytail doesn’t catch much wind in Bennett’s offense, but since moving off the ball last year, Low’s shaken defenders by tirelessly hunting for the right shot. The motor and look draw comparisons to Steve Nash, but Low’s influences are uniquely his. In homage to his Tahitian ancestors, he got a hip-to-ankle tat, and his T-shirts are plastered with the mantra “Eddie would go,” a reference to surfer Eddie Aikau, who died trying to paddle his board to shore from a capsized boat. Aikau’s fearless legacy has alit on Low, who committed to WSU without ever having set foot in Pullman. Naw that he’s there, the mainlanders are happy to ride his wave, holding “D-Low Would Go” signs at games. “I guess I like the sound of that,” he says. You’ll just have to trust that he means it.
