State Track Championships: Furukawa captures gold
Despite fouling on two of his three attempts, senior long-jumper Reid Furukawa recorded one mark of 22 feet, 2 1/4 inches which was good enough to earn him the gold medal at the 2008 Hawaii State Track & Field Championships. He was the only member of the Iolani Boys team to place in the Top 3.
On the girls side, sophomore Jenna Wong and junior Olivia Fatongia each captured bronze medals. Wong finished in third in the 3000 meter run with a time of 10:48.82 while Fatongia earned her medal in the discus with a distance of 119 feet, 2 inches.

It was a good thing he listened to Coach Mandy and Coach Christy because he recorded his best jump of 22′ 2.25″ on his very 1st attempt during the trials. He followed that up with 16′ 3′ and a foul. During the finals he fouled on his first attemptand followed with a 21′ 11″ jump. Prior to his 3rd and last attempt he was notified he had won the gold, but went after the meet mark of 23′ 6″ and fouled. His best jump in both the trials and finals were good enough to win on both days had it been judged separately.
Even though a few of Iolani’s participants were able to place, Iolani’s contingent of athletes that participated in the State T&F Championships represent the top 5-10% of athletes within the State which is quite an accomplishment.
