NCAA Basketball: Smith and Mounts pick colleges

Iolani senior forward Jaime Smith, the 2-time ILH Player-of-the-Year and 2-time All-State 1st Team selection, has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at UNLV under newly hired head coach Kathy Oliver (former UCLA head coach).

Smith and MountsSmith chose UNLV over Northern Arizona, Hawai’i and Utah, and also was recruited by Cal State Northridge and San Francisco. She will now be competing in the same conference as former Iolani standout Hennasea Tokumura ‘06 who just completed her second season at the University of Utah. The two played together in 2005 and 2006.

Smith was also recently named as one of 12 student-athletes to the 2008 HHSAA Hall of Honor (Iolani’s only recipient).

2008 ILH Player-of-the-Year Taylor Mounts, a 6-6 center on the Iolani Boys Basketball team, will take his game to Salem, Oregon next year to play for the Willamette University Men’s Basketball Team. The Bearcats compete in NCAA Division III.

Mounts follows in the footsteps of Iolani alumnus and former Willamette standout Cavan Scanlan ‘92 who played for the Bearcats from 1993-96. Scanlan won a national championship in his freshman season in 1993.
