College Basketball: Kyle Pape ‘05 appears in Sporting News

Colorado School of Mines guard Kyle Pape ‘05 gained some national attention when the Sporting News published stats from the 2007-08 season in the recent edition of their annual College Basketball Yearbook.

Pape, a pre-season all-conference first team selection this season, is listed in a tie for 9th in scoring (nationally) with a per game average of 20.7 points and is 7th overall in free-throw percentage at 89.1%.

The Colorado School of Mines is located in Golden, Colorado and competes in NCAA Division II.

2008-09 Pre-Season All-Conference: Kyle Pape ‘05

Colorado School of Mines’ guard Kyle Pape ‘05 has been named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) 2008-09 Preseason All-East Division Team.

Pape, a 6-2, 190-lb. senior, was the only player to start all 29 games last season for CSM. He was a unanimous First Team All-RMAC East Division selection last season after finishing second in the league in scoring 20.9 points per game third in free throw percentage (.891).

Pape scored 20-or-more points on 21 occasions and reached double figures in 27 of 29 games. As a sophomore, he was a Second Team All-RMAC East Division selection as the second-leading scorer for the Orediggers (13.7 ppg). He also led the team in field goals made (125), three-point field goals made (62), free throw percentage (.776), points (371), assists (82) and steals (26).

In his first year at Mines (2005-06), Pape earned RMAC Freshman of the Year and Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team honors while leading CSM in scoring at 14.2 ppg

USA Athletes International Team: Kyle Pape ‘05

Kyle PapeKyle Pape ‘05, a 2008 All-RMAC East Division First Team selection at the Colorado School of Mines, was one of nine players selected to compete for USA Athletes International in games throughout northern Europe.

Made up of players from lower level colleges in Virginia, Colorado, California and Indiana, the team will leave from Washington D.C. in two weeks to face teams from England, France, Belgium and Holland.

USA Athletes International, Inc. (USAAI) is a “non-profit organization dedicated to giving college and high school athletes and coaches the opportunity to participate in competition around the world, to promote sports and foster an international bond, as well as provide those athletes with the opportunity to broaden their educational, cultural and competitive knowledge of the world.”

MPSF Volleyball Honors: Kawika Shoji, Brent Asuka

Brent AsukaKawika ShojiKawika Shoji ‘06 of Stanford and Brent Asuka ‘05 of UC Irvine were honored by the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation as All-Conference selections for the 2008 season.

Shoji, who appeared in every match for the Cardinal, was named to the All-Conference Second Team after finishing first (on the team) in assists and total service aces and second in total digs. Asuka, the starting libero for the Anteaters, was an Honorable Mention after finishing third in the conference in digs at just under 3 per game (2.99).

Both Stanford and UC Irvine fell in the quarterfinal round of the MPSF tournament.

2008 All-RMAC First Team: Kyle Pape ‘05

Kyle PapeKyle Pape ‘05, a 6-0, 190-lb. junior guard at the Colorado School of Mines, was a unanimous selection to the First Team All-RMAC East Division squad.

The only Oredigger to start all 29 games, Pape concluded the 2007-08 regular season ranked first on the team and second in the RMAC in scoring at 20.7 ppg shooting 45.6% from the field and 36.2% (54-of-149) from three-point range. He also finished with just over 2.0 assists and 3.0 rebounds per game to go along with a team-high 24 steals.

Pape reached the 20-point plateau in 21 of 29 games this winter including a career-best 37 points against Nebraska - Kearney on January 26th. This season he led the RMAC in points scored (601), free throws attempted (174) and free throws made (155) while finishing second and third, respectively, in field goals made (tied - 196) and free throw percentage (.891).

As an Oredigger, Pape has started 82 of 83 games and is averaging 16.3 ppg in three seasons. Following his first season at Mines in 2005-06, Pape garnered RMAC Freshman of the Year, RMAC Shootout All-Tournament and Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team accolades. Last season, he was named to the RMAC East Division second team.

Pape is currently majoring in Civil Engineering.

NCAA Division II: Kyle Pape ‘05 nets career-high 37 points

Kyle PapeColorado School of Mines guard Kyle Pape ‘05 scored a career-high 37 points Saturday evening in a 78-75 road loss to the University of Nebraska - Kearney.

In his last four games, Kyle is averaging 25 points per game with highs of 37 and 31 and is shooting an incredible 96.2% (26-27) from the line. On the season, he leads the team at 19.9 points per game on 43.6% shooting from the field and 86.8% from the freethrow line.

Despite Kyle’s individual efforts, the Orediggers are struggling this season at 9-12 overall and 2-9 in conference.

A Good Day for Iolani Basketball: Six Wins!

Iolani BasketballSix up… six down! The Iolani Basketball program walked away with an undefeated 4-0 record against ILH competition yesterday while two other teams with Iolani ties earned wins against their conference opponents.

The Iolani Girls Basketball team jumped out to a 30-5 halftime lead and held off the Kamehameha Warriors 47-34 led by 19 points from Chanel Hirata who hit a game-high six three-pointers.

The Boys team followed up that performance with an early 9-0 lead and finishing with a 49-37 win over Mid-Pacific. The Raiders were led by senior center Taylor Mounts and junior forward Pablo Warner who had 17 and 12 points respectively.

Each of the Division II programs also earned wins yesterday. The Boys defeated St. Louis 40-33 behind 11 points from forward Matt Koyama while the Girls upended Kamehameha 54-46, getting 17 points from Jessica Sasaki.

On the mainland, the #4 Washington State Cougars picked up their 14th win of the season with a 73-58 victory over USC to remain undefeated on the year. Senior guard Derrick Low ‘04 scored 10 points with 3 rebounds, 5 assists and no turnovers in 39 minutes of play.

Kyle Pape ‘05 had another solid performance for the Colorado School of Mines as they were able to defeat CSU-Pueblo 66-61 on the road. Kyle scored 15 points for the Mines to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists (0 turnovers).

East Division Player of the Week: Kyle Pape ‘05

Kyle PapeColorado School of Mines’ Kyle Pape ‘05 has been selected as the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) / Baden East Division Player of the Week, as announced a week ago by the RMAC.

A 6-0, 190-lb. junior guard, Pape averaged 22.3 points per game and shot 52.5 % from the field (31-of-59) as the Orediggers compiled a 3-1 record from December 21st - 29th. Pape, who also shot 87.5 % (21-of-24) from the free throw line and 42.9 % from three-point range (6-of-14) during that four-game span, is currently ranked second in the RMAC in scoring (20.3 points per game). Pape has reached the 20-point plateau in 10 of 13 games this season and has amassed double figures in scoring in all but one contest. Even more, Pape is currently ranked fourth in the RMAC in free throw percentage (83.3 %; 60-of-72).

Home for Christmas: Kyle Pape ‘05

Kyle PapeColorado School of Mines junior guard Kyle Pape ‘05 will be spending the holidays at home this Christmas… though not just for sentimental reasons.

His Orediggers are in Hawaii to face Seattle Pacific and Hawaii Pacific in a two-game series that begins today at 2:00pm. Kyle, a preseason all-conference selection, currently leads the team in scoring at just under 20 points per game and is coming fresh off of a 21 point performance in a loss to Western New Mexico this past Sunday.

CSM faces Seattle Pacific today at 2:00pm at BYU-Hawaii and Hawaii Pacific tomorrow (12/22) at 7:30pm at Neal Blaisdell Center.

Colorado School of Mines: Kyle Pape ‘05

Kyle Pape - MinesKyle Pape ‘05, a junior guard at the Colorado School of Mines, is off to strong start this season leading his team in scoring in each of their first six games. Pape is averaging 22.3 points per game on 43.6% shooting while also knocking down 84.2% of his freethrows (32-38) .

Through his last three games, Pape is shooting 50% from the field and 45% from three-point range. On November 24th, he had the opportunity to play against former high school adversary and summertime teammate Sam Wilhoite (Kalaheo ‘04) when UH-Hilo traveled to Denver to face the Orediggers. Pape scored 24 points and grabbed 5 rebounds in the 77-72 win while Wilhoite picked up a double-double with 16 points and 14 boards.

The Orediggers are currently 4-2 and will open conference play on Thursday at home against Western State.

FYI: Pape and his CSM teammates will be in Hawaii on December 21 & 22 for games against Seattle Pacific University and HPU.

College Basketball Roundup: Weekend Review

Bobby NashWashington State senior guard Derrick Low ‘04 scored 14 points in a 68-41 win over Eastern Washington at home at Friel Court. Low was 5-10 from the field, including 3-7 from three point range, in just 26 minutes of play. The No.10-ranked Cougars will be back on the court again today when they face the Boise State Broncos at 4:00pm HST (Not televised locally).

Despite scoring a career-high 22 points to go along with 9 rebounds, Bobby Nash ‘03 didn’t get off to quite the start he wanted as the University of Hawaii fell 73-72 to San Diego in an up-tempo battle decided by a game winning steal and freethrow in the final seconds. The Bows will next face national powerhouse Illinois on Friday evening at 8:05pm at the Stan Sheriff Center.

Sophomore point guard Hennasea Tokumura ‘06 came off the bench to score a career-high 11 points for the Utah Utes in a 78-32 win over Fort Lewis College in the team’s second exhibition game on November 6th. Tokumura was 4-6 from the field, including 3-4 from three, in 20 minutes of play. The Utes will play their first official game on November 15th at home against UC Irvine.

Kyle Pape ‘05, a Pre-Season All-Conference selection for the Colorado School of Mines (DII), recorded a double-double in a 72-54 exhibition win over Johnson & Wales University on Friday evening. Pape scored a game-high 16 points on 5-12 shooting (3-6 from three) with 11 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. In the team’s opener against Division I Northern Colorado, Pape scored 21 points on 7-14 shooting in a 92-79 loss (CSM led 45-33 at halftime).

Preseason All-Conference: Kyle Pape ‘05

Kyle PapeColorado School of Mines’ basketball player and former Hawaii State Player of the Year Kyle Pape ‘05 has been named to the 2007-08 Preseason All-Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference East Division Team.

Pape, a 6-1 junior guard, was named 2nd Team All-RMAC East Division last winter after averaging 13.7 points per game and 3.0 assists per game. The only Oredigger to start all 27 games in 2006-07, he led CSM in field goals made (125), free throw percentage (77.6%), assists (82) and steals (26) while averaging a team-high 34.3 minutes per game.

Colorado School of Mines is picked to finish fifth in the East Division in the 2007-08 RMAC Men’s Basketball Preseason Poll. The Orediggers open their season with the Colorado School of Mines Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 16th and 17th, at Lockridge Arena.

Weekend Sports Update: Iolani Alumni

Megan BurtonCavan Scanlan ‘92 and the Samoan National Team took the Bronze medal in the 2007 South Pacific Games in Samoa. Through 8 games, Cavan averaged 6.5 points per game on 71% shooting (15 for 21) in helping the team to an overall record of 6-2.

Utah junior running back Raynold Stowers ‘04 rushed for 21 yards on 6 carries in a 20-12 loss to the Air Force Academy in the team’s home opener at Rice-Eccles Stadium in Salt Lake City.

Ashley Aratani ‘04, a senior defensive specialist for the #8-ranked Washington Huskies, appeared in two matches this weekend to help her team improve their undefeated record to 8-0.

St. Mary’s sophomore middle blocker Megan Burton ‘06 (shown, right) had a steady weekend for the Gaels hitting .229 with 13 kills and 11 blocks in two losses to #9 BYU and #17 Cal-Poly. Freshman setter Kapua Kamana’o ‘07 also saw significant action against BYU and finished the match with 29 assists and 6 digs.

New Mexico sophomore goal keeper Kiani Wong ‘05 gave up just her second goal of the season in a 3-1 victory over Utah Valley State.

Freshman midfielder Nickey Ha ‘07 appeared in two games this weekend for the Loyola Marymount women’s soccer team who earned a tie (Indiana, 0-0) and a loss (Maryland, 3-0) in the Indiana University Hoosier Classic.

While in Hawaii for the Outrigger Hotels and Resorts Classic, Pacific freshman Sammi Teramae ‘07 picked up two more assists (one in each game) to add to her team leading point total of 8. The Tigers improved to 3-0-1 after earning a tie and a win in games against the University of Hawaii (2-2) and the University of Tennessee - Martin (1-0).

NCAA Women’s Volleyball: Iolani Alumni in Action

While current Iolani players will be competing for the title in the 25th Annual Ann Kang Invitational Volleyball Tournament which begins today, several of the tournament’s alumni will be in action throughout the mainland competing for their teams as they prepare for their upcoming NCAA season.

Pro Baseball: Ian Mopas ‘05 signs with Minnesota

Ian MopasDrafted in the 26th round coming out of high school in 2005, Ian Mopas ‘05 was selected again by the Minnesota Twins in the 30th round in 2006 as a “draft-and-follow” after his first season at Golden West Community College. The 18 year-old left-handed pitcher signed with the Twins yesterday for an undisclosed amount and will be reporting to their training facility in Fort Myers, Florida.

Had the Twins been unable to sign Ian, they would have lost his rights and allowed him to become eligible for the upcoming draft on June 7 and 8.
