On Campus: Statue of Dr. Sun Yat Sen Completed

The likeness of a young Sun Yat Sen, often referred to as the “Father of Modern China“, has been immortalized in a bronze statue on the new lawn fronting the Castle Building. Dr. Sun, known during his boarding days as Tai Cheong or Tai Chu, enrolled at Iolani School at age 13 (in 1879) and later graduated in 1882.

In the Midweek: Iolani creates “Tent of Hope” for Darfur

Iolani Art teacher Cheri Keefer and students from the Lower School joined the recently launched “Tents of Hope” project that transforms refugee tents into unique works of art. Their tent will join 49 others from groups across the country Nov. 7 to 9 at the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

Deemed the “Gathering of the Tents,” this marks the culmination of a year-long processes to bring awareness and support for the people who have fled to displacement camps in Darfur or refugee camps in neighboring Chad and the Central African Republic.

After the event, participants have the option to ship their tents to these makeshift communities through the assistance of Darfur Peace and Development, or to bring the tents back to their own communities to be used as focal points of activism. For Keefer and her students, there was no other option. Their tent, the sole one from Hawaii, should become a shelter for families until they can return to their own communities.

On Campus: Iolani Students Open the 2008-09 School Year

Castle Building - IolaniIolani HawkIt’s that time of year again… 1,843 Iolani students will be heading off to Kamoku Street today for the start of the 2008-09 school year.

So, what’s changed over the last three months?

The Castle Building has undergone the most dramatic changes with the outer wall being replaced by a row of steps covered by four large trellises. A portion of the road fronting the building has been turned into a cement walkway to match the existing sidewalk that runs along the mauka side of the I-Building.

Convention Drive has been widened, repaved and repainted to add more stalls for visitors and senior parking.

The metal ‘Io (hawk) has been removed from the area in front of the current student activities office. Its likeness, though, has been relocated to a freshly painted mural on the main wall near the senior benches.

And finally… Mrs. Takara has retired. Not good news for the punctually-challenged. I have a feeling that the “unexcused” stamp may get a bit more use this year.

Campus Construction: Castle Building remodel underway

Construction is well underway on the Castle Building… Crews have already removed the outer wall, dug up a large portion of the pavement and installed four large curved trellis-like structures (green) along the front of the building.

Rumor has it that there will be a wide set of steps with a large Ward-like overhang to provide covering for students to sit and hang out. Further down the road toward the canal, convention drive is being widened and repaved.

(Sorry, the photo was taken with my Blackberry, so its not too good. - Iolani Alumni)

2008 Iolani Graduation: 17 Valedictorians Named

Iolani LogoSeventeen seniors in the Class of 2008 have been honored as Valedictorians for the exemplary academic record over the course of the last four years. Together their cumulative GPA was 4.30.

    The 2008 Iolani Valedictorians:

  • Signe Chambers (Washington University - St. Louis)
  • Alanna Cooney (Washington University - St. Louis)
  • Aaron Fong (Pomona)
  • Jonathon Fung (UH - Regents Scholar)
  • Ryan Gomoto (USC)
  • Allison Hasegawa (Colorado College)
  • Kimberlee Hashiba (Northwestern)
  • Pamela Ho (USC)
  • Kate Ikehara (USC)
  • David Jaress (University of Chicago)
  • Scott Kaneshiro (Harvard)
  • Leslie Kim (Harvard)
  • Clay Ozaki-Train (Arizona State)
  • Christine Tamaru (Whitman College)
  • Kyla Teramoto (Santa Clara)
  • Marisa Wang (UPenn)
  • Zhuangjun Wang (USC)

Why so many? To select their valedictorians, Iolani determines the lowest possible GPA of the students who only received As throughout their high school career (regardless of Honors or AP classes) and sets that as a baseline. All students with cumulative GPAs above the baseline are considered valedictorians.

(In theory, the baseline GPA could be set at 4.0 if a given student took no Honors or AP courses but earned all-As. In that case, all students with GPAs above 4.0, even those who didn’t get all As, but took Honors and AP courses, would be considered valedictorians.)

Iolani College Choices: 23 students to Santa Clara

Of the 228 Iolani seniors attending one of more than 94 different universities, 23 will be heading to Santa Clara University next fall, the most of any college. Coming in tied for second with 21 students apiece were the University of Southern California and the University of Hawaii.

The tuition at Santa Clara for the 2008-09 school year will be $34,950 (fees included). Along with an estimated $11,070 per year for room and board, the grand total for a single year at Santa Clara, not including the record-high prices for plane tickets, is $46,020.

The University of Hawaii, by comparison, is just $5,952 per year ($2,976 per semester) for a full-time student, just more than a third of the current Iolani tuition. Room and board on campus is estimated at $7,500 per year.

Tuition and fees at USC comes to $37,692. Together with room and board ($11,298), a one-year education from the University of Southern California comes to $48,990.

New House or College? The total cost of an education for one year at Santa Clara equates to $3,835 per month which would nearly cover the mortgage payment for an $800,000 home (assuming 20% down and a total loan amount of $640,000 at 6.0% over 30 years). Unreal!
