Utah running back Raynold Stowers ‘04 scored his second touchdown of the season from a yard out in a 63-14 rout of the San Diego Aztecs on Saturday afternoon at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, California.

The 6-0 senior finished as the game’s second-leading rusher with 51 yards on 9 carries.

On the season, Stowers is averaging 4.5 yard per carry on 17 carries with two touchdowns and a long of 21 yards.

The 7th-ranked Utes are undefeated at 11-0 and will put their BCS hopes on the line when they face the 14th-ranked BYU Cougars at home on Saturday.

The Stanford Men’s Volleyball team concluded its fall season with two wins and two losses at the UC Irvine Fall Invitational this past weekend. The Invitational marked the end of an eight game stretch that began in mid-October with the Husky Oil Can-Am Challenge where the Cardinal went 3-1.

Freshman Brad Lawson ‘08, the 2008 Hawaii State Player-of-the-Year, had a strong fall recording highs of 12 kills in a five-game win over UC Irvine and 13 kills in a four-game win over Alberta.

Junior setter Kawika Shoji ‘06, an AVCA 2nd Team All-American last season, was named to the All-Tournament Team at the Can-Am Challenge.

Stanford will open their season on January 9th, 2009 at the UCSB/Elephant Bar Challenge in Santa Barbara.

Willamette freshman Taylor Mounts ‘08 scored a game-high 22 points and grabbed 9 rebounds in a 106-74 rout of the Alumni on Saturday evening at the Cone Field House.

The 6-6 forward connected on 9 of 16 shots (including 1-4 from three) and was a perfect 3-3 from the line. He also added one block, one assist and one steal in his 23 minutes of play.

Mounts and the Bearcats will open their season on Friday, November 21st at the Duane Wolfe Golden Rule Shootout in Caldwell, Idaho against the College of Idaho.

Willamette University is located in Salem, Oregon and is a member of the Northwest Conference (NCAA Division III).

In her first official game as a member of the UNLV Women’s Basketball team, freshman Jamie Smith ‘08 poured in 14 points and grabbed 9 rebounds for the Lady Rebels in a 92-71 win over Sacramento State. The 6-0 guard/forward shot 5-9 from the field, including 3-5 from three-point range, while also contributing one assist, two blocks and three steals.

On November 8th, Smith scored 6 points and recorded 9 rebounds in a 62-55 exhibition win over Cal State San Bernadino.

UNLV (1-0), picked to finish 7th (of 9 teams) in the MWC pre-season poll, will play their next game tomorrow afternoon at home against Southern Utah.

University of Utah junior point guard Hennasea Tokumura ‘06 suffered a knee injury and will likely miss the rest of this season. The Utes are the preseason favorite to win the Mountain West.

Kala Ka’aihue ‘03, a power-hitting first baseman for the Honolulu Sharks, is hoping for a strong finish by his team as they close out the 2008 Hawaii Winter Baseball season with two games against the Waikiki Beachboys. The Sharks are a half game behind the Beachboys and need two wins to earn a spot in the championship game against the West Oahu Canefires who have already clinched their division.

On the season, Ka’aihue leads the team in home runs (4) and RBI (14) and is also third on the team in walks (12).

Four Iolani seniors will be playing at the college level next season after making commitments to compete at Division I universities yesterday, the first day of the early signing period.

From Iolani.org: “David Fink signed a National Letter of Intent to play golf at Oregon State. Chelsea Hardin signed a National Letter of Intent to play volleyball at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Maile Scarpino also made a verbal commitment to continue her academic career and volleyball career at Hofstra University in New York.”

Two-sport standout, Breland Almadova verbally committed to play baseball at the University of Hawaii. The 6-1, 180 pound outfielder was an Advertiser All-State honorable mention selection last season. His father Brian played football at UH from 1980 to 1982.

The Iolani Boys Water Polo team upended the previously undefeated Punahou Buffanblu 8-5 at their home pool Friday evening to capture first in the ILH Tournament and force a winner-take-all matchup with regular season champion Punahou for the overall title on Wednesday, November 12th at Kamehameha at 5:30pm. (There is NO STATE TOURNAMENT for boys water polo, so this is THE final game.)

Wassup everyone. I’m Derrick Low. For any of you who haven’t gone to a game yet, I’m the one on the court with really long hair. Let me start off by telling you all a little about my self. Where should I start? Well, I’m born and raised in Hawaii, Honolulu to be specific. I went to Washington State University for 4 years, before coming here to join the Spirit. I have 2 traditional Hawaiian tattoos that have significant meaning to my family and me. I am kind of a neat freak…borderline OCD. I like things that smell good. I love the beach. My ancestors can be traced back to the ancient shark god, Kamohoali’i, which does NOT mean I have immunity when a great white shark decides to attack me here in Australia, LIAM!!!!!!!!!! Ha-ha. Besides playing basketball, I would say my next favorite thing to do is sleep.

So far my stay here in Australia has been great. I really enjoy it out here. One of the main reasons why I came here in the first place was because there were similarities between here and Hawaii. I thought…Australia has nice weather, nice beaches, great basketball, and most important, they speak English. So far, I feel like I made a great decision to come here and be apart of the Spirit as well as experience Australia.

With an undefeated record against Division II opponents, the Iolani Football team received the top seed in the 2008 Hawaii State Football Championships. After a first round bye, the Raiders will face the winner of the quarterfinal matchup between Konawaena and the eventual OIA Champion on Friday, November 28th at Roosevelt at 7:30pm.

On the season, Iolani is 6-2 in the ILH with one game remaining this Saturday against Pac-5. Should they win, the Raiders could contend for the overall ILH title with a Kamehameha win over Punahou and a Punahou win over St. Louis in the upcoming weeks.

Former University of Hawaii standout Bobby Nash ‘03 led his team to their first two wins in franchise history this past weekend in Fukuoka.

On Saturday evening Nash scored a team-high 27 points and grabbed 8 rebounds in a 84-78 win over the Fukuoka Rizing. He returned the next night to score a game-high 23 points (6 rebounds) to help the Lakestars again hold off the Rizing for a 70-64 victory.

The Shiga Lakestars are now 2-4 on the season and will return home for two games against the Oita Heatdevils on Saturday and Sunday.

With wins over UC Davis and Pacific at home last weekend, the Long Beach State Women’s Volleyball team improved to 18-4 on the season and are in sole possession of 2nd in the Big West Standings at 7-2.

Freshman Lauren Minkel ‘08 has appeared in every match for the 49ers recording 125 total digs and 4 kills from her position as a defensive specialist. In a three-game sweep of Pacific on Saturday, she finished second on the team in digs with 4 and recorded 1 kill in 1 attempt (1.000).

The University of Utah women’s basketball team was picked as the preseason favorite to win the Mountain West Conference in the upcoming season. Last year, the Utes went undefeated in the Mountain West at 16-0 and received an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.

This season, Utah returns Preaseason Player of the Year Morgan Warburton and all-conference selection Kalee Whipple to an already experienced team. Junior guard Hennasea Tokumura ‘06 will also be back this season and looking to make a larger contribution after serving as a backup in 2007-08 behind MWC Player-of-the-Year Leilani Mitchell (who was later selected in the WNBA draft).

Note: Tokumura won the Mountain West Conference Scholar-Athlete Award last season after earning a team-best 3.59 cumulative grade-point average.

The Iolani Boys Cross Country team claimed the 2008 ILH Championship this past weekend by placing five athletes in the top 10, led by freshman Troy Esaki (second, 17:31) and senior captain Tyler Mulloy (third, 17:38, shown).

Up next for the team will be the Honolulu Marathon Cross Country State Championships which will be held at the Hawaii Preparatory Academy on the Big Island next week.

The Iolani Intermediate Football team captured the 2008 ILH Championship on Saturday afternoon with a 23-6 win over Word of Life at Kozuki Stadium on the Iolani campus.

Iolani finished their season at 6-1 with their only loss coming against Kamehameha (14-13) in the opening game of the season. The Raiders are led by head coach Ivan Suzuki ‘89 and alumni assistants Kevin Manuel ‘95, Greg Young ‘91, Gary Young ‘91, Dean Young ‘89, Eric Perkins ‘96, Blaine Kiyuna ‘93, Nolan Nakamura ‘92, Clint Onigama ‘96, Reinaldo Pacheco ‘98, Kawika Nakoa ‘02, Keone Nakoa ‘04 and Chuckie Nakoa ‘70.

Colorado School of Mines guard Kyle Pape ‘05 gained some national attention when the Sporting News published stats from the 2007-08 season in the recent edition of their annual College Basketball Yearbook.

Pape, a pre-season all-conference first team selection this season, is listed in a tie for 9th in scoring (nationally) with a per game average of 20.7 points and is 7th overall in free-throw percentage at 89.1%.

The Colorado School of Mines is located in Golden, Colorado and competes in NCAA Division II.
